For my class project, I am working on creating and editing videos that compares historical photos of Yonkers back then vs today. I used Design Thinking throughout this project in the following ways: Empathize: I considered viewers who may not be familiar with Yonkers history and focused on making the comparisons clear and engaging. Define: I identified the main problem, how to clearly communicate change over time in a way that’s easy to understand and visually impactful. Ideate: I brainstormed different approaches for transitions, photo placements, movement, and pacing to make the video more better. Prototype: I experimented with rough video drafts, tested different transitions , and tried out different layouts. Test: I reviewed the early versions, made improvements to timing based on feedback.

Redesigning Riseupnational.org Website, changing the design and layout, improving UX, and adding and organizing new/existing content. Using media sources provided for the History Grit Project, while using resources fellow classmates researched or created such as logo design, video clips, imagery from historical and modern images of Yonkers.

My role is to research, design, and communicate the story of John Edward Bruce through research. I am responsible for gathering historical information about Yonkers in the early 1900s, analyzing the social and economic conditions of the time, and transforming that research into clear and engaging storytelling. My role also includes applying design thinking to shape the project, ensuring the content is meaningful, accessible, and relevant to modern audiences while highlighting overlooked history and voices.

For the class project, I’m working on a “Great Migration Road Map Animation.” Basically, it’s an interactive map that tracks the massive movement of people from the South to the North and West, but it also follows the specific life journey of John Edward “Grit” Bruce. I’m using a gold path for him to show how his “micro-migration” looked different from the general routes.
I’ve been using Design Thinking to get it all organized. In the Define phase, I spent a lot of time in Photoshop cleaning up old maps and separating layers so I could actually animate the paths properly. For the Ideate phase, I focused on visual storytelling—like choosing a typewriter font to represent Bruce’s career in journalism and adding historical “fun fact” pop-ups to fill in the empty spaces on the map.

I use Design thinking in this project because it is the methodology used to understand users, redefine problems, and develop innovative solutions. In this project I am creating a motion graphic using historical photos and videos of Yonkers in the 1900’s and compered how it looks today. The idea is showing the past/ present bringing life thought the imagens and videos.
